The GATE question paper is the only place where question difficulty and phrasing are real, not simulated. A mock test approximates the interface. A textbook set approximates the syllabus. Only the actual paper shows how GATE frames a question under real exam pressure, inside a fixed 3-hour window.
GATE 2027 is conducted by IIT Madras. GATE scores are used for M.Tech admissions to IITs, NITs and IIITs, and for recruitment at several PSUs. GATE 2027's own question paper will not exist until after the exam is held. Candidates preparing now should treat the GATE 2026 paper, from IIT Guwahati, as the latest official paper for practice. This page covers past papers (2007-2026), answer keys, sample papers, subject-wise PDFs and a study plan.

Yes, GATE allows one paper, or two papers from an approved combination list. The official GATE website publishes the exact combinations each cycle, since allowed pairs can change year to year.
Past GATE papers from 2007 to 2026 are downloadable from the official GATE 2026 portal, run by IIT Guwahati. It offers bulk downloads for older years and separate year-wise downloads for the last five cycles.
The official source is gate2026.iitg.ac.in, IIT Guwahati's GATE 2026 portal. It hosts bulk downloads for 2020 and earlier, and separate year-wise pages for 2021 to 2026.

The archive organises papers by subject code: AE, AG, AR, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, CY, DA, EC, EE, ES, EY, GE, GG, IN, MA, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE, PH, PI, ST, TF, XE, XH and XL. Not every code appears in every year.
Code availability varies by year
A subject code listed here may not have a separate paper in every GATE cycle. Some papers were added or renamed over time, so check the year you need before assuming a code applies.
A question paper without a solution key only answers half the question. IIT Guwahati released the GATE 2026 provisional answer key along with each candidate's response sheet, through GOAPS. It published the final answer key once the objection window closed.
It came in two stages. The provisional key went up with the response sheet on GOAPS. The final key followed after candidates got a window to raise objections.
Follow this order so the solved paper actually tells you something:
The GATE 2026 question paper with its answer key is available on the official GATE 2026 website. IIT Guwahati released it after the exam, and it is currently the latest official GATE paper. Candidates preparing for GATE 2027 can use it for full-length practice.
It is on gate2026.iitg.ac.in, alongside the Master Question Papers and answer keys for earlier cycles.
| GATE year | Question paper | Answer key |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Official Master Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
| 2025 | Official Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
| 2024 | Official Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
| 2023 | Official Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
| 2022 | Official Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
| 2021 | Official Question Paper | Official Answer Key |
The answer key follows the question order in the Master Question Paper. A candidate's own exam console may show questions in a different order. Match by question number, not by position on screen.
MCQs carry negative marking. MSQs and NAT questions carry none, and MSQs get no partial marking even for a partly correct selection. A small number of questions may be marked MTA (Marks To All). Every candidate then gets the marks, regardless of the answer chosen.
Treat it as a full mock exam, run under real conditions, then review it properly.
Step 1
Select your GATE paper
Pick the subject paper that matches what you will attempt in GATE 2027.
Step 2
Download the official paper
Get the GATE 2026 question paper from the official portal.
Step 3
Set a 3-hour timer
Match the real exam duration exactly.
Step 4
Attempt the complete paper
Do not skip sections, even ones you find weak.
Step 5
Do not check the key mid-test
Finish the full paper before looking at any answer.
Step 6
Calculate your marks
Score it using the official marking scheme after you finish.
Step 7
Check every incorrect answer
Go through each wrong answer against the official key.
Step 8
Note where mistakes happened
Log the topic behind each wrong answer.
Step 9
Revise those topics
Go back to the chapter, not just the question.
Step 10
Attempt the paper again later
Re-attempt after some time to check if the gap closed.
GATE 2027 runs 30 test papers. Solve papers from the subject you have chosen. A different subject's paper will not match your syllabus or your scoring pattern.
GATE 2027 has 30 papers, after adding Robotics and Automation (RA) as a new paper and merging Textile Engineering and Fibre Science into the XE section as XE9. In GATE 2026 and earlier archives, Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) still appears as its own paper code.
The papers span these subjects: Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Chemistry, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, Production and Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Robotics and Automation, Engineering Sciences (XE), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH), and Life Sciences (XL).
CS, ME and CE papers see the highest download volume, since they carry the largest candidate base.
| GATE paper | Code |
|---|---|
| Computer Science and Information Technology | CS |
| Mechanical Engineering | ME |
| Civil Engineering | CE |
| Electrical Engineering | EE |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | EC |
| Chemical Engineering | CH |
| Data Science and Artificial Intelligence | DA |
| Instrumentation Engineering | IN |
| Aerospace Engineering | AE |
| Biotechnology | BT |
The GATE 2026 official website provided mock test links to familiarise candidates with the CBT interface. The GATE 2027 site is expected to do the same once it opens.
No. GATE does not publish a separate sample paper. Real previous year question papers serve that purpose instead, since they carry actual questions asked under exam conditions.
| Previous year question paper | Sample or mock test |
|---|---|
| Taken from an actual GATE exam | Built to familiarise candidates with the exam interface |
| Shows questions from a specific exam year | Helps candidates get used to the CBT system |
| Useful for studying real exam trends | Mainly useful for interface comfort |
| Comes with official answer keys for recent years | May not reflect the actual questions asked |
| Useful for timed, full-length practice | Useful as a warm-up before full-length practice |
The mock test is not a topic guide
The official GATE site states the mock test does not indicate the actual exam topics. The ratio of MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions in the mock can differ from the real exam.
Solving real papers does more than build confidence. It changes specific, measurable things about how a candidate prepares.
Real papers show how GATE actually frames a question, and the real mix of MCQ, MSQ and NAT in a given paper.
A full paper, solved under time pressure, shows your strong topics and your weak ones far better than topic-wise practice does.
GATE runs a 3-hour CBT. Timed practice on a real paper trains your pacing across sections.
MSQ and NAT questions behave differently from MCQs. Practicing all three formats avoids a surprise on exam day.
MCQs are penalised for a wrong answer, MSQs and NAT are not. Solving official papers helps this become instinct, not a rule you recall mid-exam.
GATE does not repeat questions, but it repeats concepts across years. A few years of papers make the recurring ones obvious.
Repeated practice cuts silly mistakes: a miscalculation, a wrong assumption, or a misread question.
Solving papers works only when it follows a plan. Random practice, without a system, wastes most of the benefit.
Step 1
Finish the syllabus first
Save full papers for after you have covered a good chunk of the syllabus. Use topic-wise questions early on instead.
Step 2
Work backwards from the most recent papers
Start with GATE 2026, then move to 2025, 2024 and earlier.
Step 3
Time yourself properly
Solve the paper in one sitting, over 3 hours, with no pause halfway.
Step 4
Do not peek at the answer key mid-test
Finish the whole paper first. Checking mid-test gives a false sense of how prepared you are.
Step 5
Break down your mistakes
Sort every error: concept unclear, calculation slip, misread question, ran out of time, guessed wrong, or forgot a formula.
Step 6
Go back to your weak spots
Revisit the chapter behind a topic that tripped you up, and do more questions there before your next full paper.
Step 7
Track your progress
Keep a log of scores, mistakes and weak topics, so you can see real improvement over time.
Answers to what readers ask most often.
From the official portal of that year's organising institute. For GATE 2026, that is gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Papers go up after the exam concludes, and the final versions are released alongside the answer key.
No. GATE normalises scores across sessions to keep results comparable. Subjects with multiple sessions, such as Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering, get separate question sets per session.
No. GATE does not publish a separate sample paper. Real previous year question papers serve that function instead.
There is no official recommendation. Solving the last 3 to 4 years thoroughly, with proper review of every mistake, usually beats rushing through a larger stack without analysing errors.
