A valid GATE score gets a candidate into M.Tech, M.E. and PhD programmes at IITs, NITs and IIITs. It also opens recruitment drives at several public sector undertakings (PSUs), without a separate written test. GATE 2027 is conducted by IIT Madras. The exam falls on six dates in February 2027, across two shifts each day.
GATE exam 2027 is a national computer-based test for Master's and doctoral admission in engineering, science and related fields. IIT Madras is the Organizing Institute for GATE 2027 (GATE 2027 Information Brochure, ). The GATE exam runs on six days in February 2027. Regular registration closes on 5 October 2026.
GATE exam is the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. IISc and the IITs conduct it jointly as a computer-based test (GATE 2027 brochure, section 5, ). It checks understanding of undergraduate subjects in engineering, technology and architecture. In science, humanities, commerce and arts, it checks both undergraduate and postgraduate-level subjects. The score shows a candidate's relative performance in one test paper.
The GATE exam full form is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The name is narrower than the GATE entrance exam itself. GATE 2027 has 30 papers, and they include Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. A candidate can apply for one or two papers in the same application.
IIT Madras is the Organizing Institute for GATE exam 2027. IISc Bengaluru and seven IITs conduct the GATE exam jointly: Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee. They act for the National Coordination Board, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. The source is the GATE 2027 website (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in). IIT Guwahati organised the GATE exam 2026 (GATE 2026 website, https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/).
GATE exam 2027 changes the paper list, the codes and the registration route. The official site and brochure list these changes (GATE 2027 brochure, highlights, ).
Institutions supported by the Ministry of Education use a valid GATE score for Master's and direct doctoral admission. Financial assistance is possible (GATE 2027 opportunities page, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/opportunities). GATE exam for MTech admission at institutes supported by the Ministry of Education needs a valid GATE score. Some colleges also use it for postgraduate admission without an MoE scholarship. Several public sector undertakings (PSUs) use it for recruitment.
The official PSU list is not exhaustive. It includes AAI, BHEL, CIL, GAIL, IOCL, NPCIL, NTPC, ONGC, POWERGRID and SAIL. Direct recruitment to some Group-A posts in the Cabinet Secretariat also uses the GATE score. Qualification in GATE is a minimum requirement for several government fellowships.
Yes, GATE exam is tough. Only about one in five candidates who appeared qualified in the largest GATE 2026 papers. Across all papers, 7,97,434 candidates appeared and 1,56,318 qualified, which is 19.6%. The table below uses the official GATE 2026 report from IIT Guwahati (GATE 2026 Statistical and Performance Report, ).
| Paper (GATE 2026) | Appeared | Qualified | Qualified share of appeared |
|---|---|---|---|
| CS: Computer Science and IT | 2,11,020 | 40,661 | 19.3% |
| EC: Electronics and Communication | 95,752 | 17,392 | 18.2% |
| CE: Civil Engineering | 76,385 | 13,949 | 18.3% |
| DA: Data Science and AI | 69,242 | 12,849 | 18.6% |
| EE: Electrical Engineering | 65,801 | 13,726 | 20.9% |
A scorecard does not secure a seat. Institutes ask for more when they shortlist. IIT Delhi set a 780 GATE score shortlisting cutoff for M.Tech CSE UR and EWS seats in 2026-27. The source is the IIT Delhi M.Tech shortlisting list (). That figure is one example and not a rule. Each institute, department and year sets its own bar.
GATE exam for MTech, M.E. and direct PhD admission suits a candidate who wants such a seat. It also suits a candidate who wants a PSU job that uses the score. GATE states that qualifying does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job. Check twice in these cases:

A candidate in the 3rd year or higher of a government-approved undergraduate degree can apply for GATE exam 2027. So can a candidate who has completed such a degree. The degree can be in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities. A candidate who is pursuing or holds a higher degree than those in the table below can also apply.
The eligibility for each degree programme depends on the current year, as this table shows.
| Degree | Eligible if you are |
|---|---|
| B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Pharm. | In the 3rd year or higher, or already completed |
| B.Arch. / Naval Architecture / Planning | In the 3rd year or higher, or already completed |
| B.Sc. (Research) / B.S. | In the 3rd year or higher, or already completed |
| B.Sc. / B.A. / B.Com. / BCA (3-year) | In the 3rd year, or already completed |

| Integrated M.Sc. / Integrated B.S.-M.S. | In the 3rd year or higher, or already completed |
| Professional society examinations equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Arch. | Section A or equivalent completed |
Yes, a 3rd-year student or graduate of a 3-year B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. or BCA programme can write GATE exam 2027. For Master's seats at IISc, IITs, NITs and CFTIs, the brochure points these candidates to JAM 2027. The source is the GATE 2027 brochure (). IIT Kharagpur organises JAM 2027. Check the target course before you pay the fee.
Yes, a lateral-entry B.E. student can write GATE exam 2027 in the 3rd year. Such a student joined the 2nd year after a Diploma. Any student in the 3rd or higher year of an approved programme is eligible. The GATE 2027 FAQs confirm this (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs).
Yes, a candidate who completed or is pursuing a qualifying degree outside India can apply for GATE exam 2027. The candidate must be in the 3rd year or higher, or hold a Bachelor's degree of at least three years. Holders of a professional society qualification can also apply. Its examination must be approved by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC as equivalent to B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch. or B.Planning. The recognised societies include:
No, GATE exam has no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts. A candidate can appear any number of times (GATE 2027 FAQs, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs). Institutes can still set their own bar for admission, and PSUs can do the same at hiring. Qualifying GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job.
No, you do not need to upload 10th, 12th, UG or PG marksheets for GATE exam 2027 registration. The official FAQ says academic documents are not required during the examination process. GATE checks identity from the photo ID chosen in the application. Admission based on the GATE score follows each admitting institute's own rules.
GATE exam 2027 registration runs online on GOAPS, the GATE Online Application Processing System. Indian nationals use DigiLocker to register. Regular registration closes on 5 October 2026 (GATE 2027 important dates, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/important_dates). The GATE 2027 registration process page has the full walkthrough.
Regular registration closes on 5 October 2026
Regular registration was extended from 27 September to 5 October 2026 without a late fee. Late-fee registration runs until 12 October 2026. IIT Madras advises candidates to register early and not wait for the last day.
Keep these GATE exam details ready before you start: your degree details, paper choice, exam cities and valid photo ID. Registration on GOAPS involves these nine steps.
The brochure warns that the form cannot be changed once you click Submit and Proceed to Payment. Later changes are possible only in the rectification window (GATE 2027 brochure, section 6, ).
The regular GATE entrance exam 2027 fee is Rs 1,000 per paper for Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates. It is Rs 2,000 per paper for all other candidates, including foreign nationals. For one paper, both fees rise by Rs 500 in the late-fee period (GATE 2027 application fees, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/application_fees).
| Category | 1 paper, regular | 2 papers, regular | 1 paper, late fee | 2 papers, late fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | Rs 1,000 | Rs 2,000 | Rs 1,500 | Rs 2,500 |
| All other candidates, including foreign nationals | Rs 2,000 | Rs 4,000 | Rs 2,500 | Rs 4,500 |
For two papers in the late-fee period, the website table shows Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,500. The brochure says two papers cost twice the one-paper fee, which would be Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000. Confirm the amount on the payment page.
These rules about GATE exam fees apply to every candidate:
Indian nationals use DigiLocker to register for GATE exam 2027. IIT Madras recommends a verified account, and an unverified account is also allowed. Your choice changes what happens at scrutiny and at the exam centre (GATE 2027 registration guidelines, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/guideline/).
Recommended by IIT Madras for a smoother experience at the exam venue. A verified account shows a blue tick. If your mobile number links to two accounts, choose the verified one.
Do not delete the DigiLocker account after you pay. GATE will send future communication only through the account used for the application. A candidate with a visual impairment who cannot complete live facial capture should write to helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in.
The GATE entrance exam 2027 needs a photograph, a signature and a valid photo ID for every candidate. SC, ST and PwD candidates also save documents in a DigiLocker folder named GATE2027 (GATE 2027 required documents, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/required_documents). The folder name has no space.
| Candidate | Save in the GATE2027 DigiLocker folder | File name |
|---|---|---|
| General, OBC-NCL, EWS | Nothing | Not applicable |
| SC, ST | Category certificate | CATEGORY.pdf |
| PwD | PwD certificate | PWD_CERT.pdf |
| PwD | UDID card | UDID_CERT.pdf |
| PwD needing scribe or extra time | Appendix B1, B2 or dyslexia certificate, joined with the PwD certificate | PWD_CERT.pdf |
Each file must be between 10 KB and 600 KB. Unreadable documents can delay the application and can lead to rejection.
The GATE entrance exam 2027 accepts a recent colour photograph of 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm. The signature must be in black or dark blue ink. The photograph must be not older than 3 months. The admit card and scorecard carry the same photograph (GATE 2027 photograph and signature rules, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/photograph_and_signature).
| Item | Photograph | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| Format | JPEG or JPG | JPEG or JPG |
| File size | 5 KB to 600 KB | 3 KB to 300 KB |
| Pixels | 200 x 260 to 530 x 690 | 250 x 80 to 580 x 180 |
| Content | Face covers 60% to 70%, plain white background, front view | Signature covers 70% to 80% of the image, signed by the applicant |
The photograph should show forehead, eyes, nose and chin, with no cap, hat or coloured glasses. The signature is not acceptable if it is in capitals, digital, with initials or on a dark background. The Aadhaar or DigiLocker photograph is not used. GATE uses your live photo and the recent photograph you upload.
A wrong photograph or signature leads to a defective application. The FAQ says you get chances to correct it up to a deadline. After that, the application is treated as provisional or rejected.
The GATE entrance exam asks for six exam cities from one GATE zone (GATE 2027 exam cities, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/exam_cities). The brochure dated 27 September 2026 still says three cities from the same zone. Confirm the number on the live application form.
Your first choice is most likely to be allotted. The other choices matter only when too many candidates pick the same first city. GATE can add or remove a city and allot a city outside your list. It offers 300+ cities in eight zones, and none abroad. Foreign nationals and Indians living abroad must also pick a city in India and arrange their own travel.
The name in your GATE form must match your valid photo ID exactly. No title such as Mr, Dr or Shri is allowed before it. GATE fetches your date of birth from DigiLocker. One email address can submit only one application. If you apply twice, only one application is accepted, and the rest are rejected without refund.
You cannot change the form right after submission. The rectification window runs from 14 to 21 October 2026. In it, you can change category, paper and exam city, add a new paper and correct personal details. An extra fee may apply per change. Name spelling corrections need supporting documents (GATE 2027 FAQs, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs).
IIT Madras has not published the fee per change for GATE exam 2027. For GATE 2026, most changes cost Rs 500 per paper. They included name, date of birth, exam city and paper. Changing gender from female to another option cost Rs 1,500 for candidates outside SC, ST and PwD. Changes to parent details, address, college name, roll number and degree details were free. The source is the GATE 2026 application fees page (https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/application-fees.html).
If you paid for one paper and want a second, add it to the same enrolment ID. Do not create a new enrolment ID. The two papers must be from an allowed combination in a single form.
Each application status tells you what GOAPS expects from you next. Log in to GOAPS to check it from time to time.
You have not made the payment yet.
The application goes to scrutiny next.
GATE is reviewing and verifying your application.
Your application has defects. Read the message and the brochure, then correct them before the deadline.
You corrected the defects, and the application goes for scrutiny again.
Scrutiny is complete and no action is needed from you.
If the internet fails during payment, log in to GOAPS again and check the payment status. If GATE received the payment, you can continue. If it did not, you can pay again. Money debited without a payment acknowledgement is credited back to your account, and this can take about fifteen working days. Extra payments for one application are also returned automatically.
The GATE 2027 helpdesk answers queries about GATE exam applications by email at helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in and by phone on 044-2257 8200. The listed hours are 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday. | Partial marking | None for any question |
Most engineering papers split the 85 subject marks into 13 of Engineering Mathematics and 72 of the core subject. The 13 marks sit inside the 85. Some papers use a different split. The accordion gives each split with its question count (GATE 2027 brochure, section 7.3, ).
GA 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics 13 marks, core subject 72 marks. Total 100 marks in 180 minutes.
GA 15 marks, subject 85 marks, no separate Mathematics split. Total 100 marks in 180 minutes.

GA 15 marks, XL0 Chemistry 25 marks in 17 questions (common), and at most two of sections XL1 to XL5. Each section has 30 marks in 19 questions. The candidate chooses the sections during the exam.
Yes, a candidate can apply for one or two GATE exam papers in a single application. Two papers must form an allowed combination. The combinations are listed in the brochure and on the official website (GATE 2027 FAQs, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs). Do not fill two forms. You can add the second paper to your original application after payment. In the multi-session case, you are assigned only one session of a paper.
A PwD candidate gets compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour if requested at application. A 3-hour paper can then run up to 4 hours (GATE 2027 brochure, section 6.5, ). The proof you need depends on the disability.
On-spot requests for a scribe or extra time at the exam hall are not entertained. A candidate found using a scribe without the disability that warrants one is disqualified.
The GATE entrance exam 2027 uses three question formats in every paper: MCQ, MSQ and NAT. The questions test recall, comprehension, application, and analysis and synthesis (GATE 2027 brochure, section 7.2, ).
MCQs offer four options with one correct answer. MSQs offer four options with one or more correct answers. NAT questions have no options, and you type the number.
1 or 2 marks. Four options, only one correct. A wrong 1-mark answer costs 1/3 mark. A wrong 2-mark answer costs 2/3 mark.
Round off only at the end of a NAT calculation and not at intermediate stages. The brochure advises this.
Yes, GATE exam has negative marking only for wrong MCQ answers. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 mark, and a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3 mark. MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking. No question gives partial marks. Net marks can even be negative for some candidates, as the official FAQ notes.
No official document fixes one MCQ, MSQ and NAT mix for GATE exam papers. The mix changes by paper and by session. In the GATE 2026 answer keys, MSQ ranged from none in ME to 24 in CS-1. NAT ranged from 13 to 28 questions. The table counts the question rows in each key.
| Paper (GATE 2026) | MCQ | MSQ | NAT | 1-mark questions | 2-mark questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CS-1 | 28 | 24 | 13 | 30 | 35 |
| EC | 42 | 10 | 13 | 30 | 35 |
| EE | 47 | 5 | 13 | 30 | 35 |
| ME | 45 | 0 | 20 | 30 | 35 |
| CE-1 | 31 | 6 | 28 | 30 | 35 |
| CE-2 | 36 | 4 | 25 | 30 | 35 |
| DA | 33 | 14 | 18 | 30 | 35 |
The GATE exam keys are on the 2027 Downloads page (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download), for example . The counts are for 2026 only. Every key had 30 one-mark and 35 two-mark questions, and General Aptitude had 10 MCQs.
GATE exam questions test four abilities, and the brochure defines each one.
General Aptitude has 10 questions worth 15 marks in every GATE paper. Five questions carry 1 mark and five carry 2 marks. The section tests language and analytical skills. It is common to all 30 papers.
Choose the XH section and the GG Part B in the application form. You cannot change them in the exam hall. In XE and XL, you choose at most two sections during the exam, after you see the questions. In AR, GE and RA, you choose Part B during the exam. To switch an XE or XL section, first de-select one. That clears your answers in it after you confirm.
GATE exam 2027 has 30 papers, and a candidate can choose one or two from an allowed combination. The official site says the syllabi for the GATE 2027 papers have been revised (GATE 2027 papers and syllabus, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/exam_papers_and_syllabus). The GATE exam full form names only engineering, but the 30 papers also cover science, humanities and life sciences. Read the GATE 2027 syllabus page for topics in each paper.
GATE exam 2027 has 30 papers, from Aerospace Engineering to the new Robotics and Automation paper. Each paper has a code that you need in the application and in the GATE exam.

Section codes for the XE, XH and XL papers changed in GATE exam 2027, and TF moved into XE. The tabs give the old GATE 2026 code beside the new code (GATE 2027 papers and syllabus, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/exam_papers_and_syllabus).
XE0 Engineering Mathematics (was A, common, 15 marks). XE1 Fluid Mechanics (B). XE2 Materials Science (C). XE3 Solid Mechanics (D). XE4 Thermodynamics (E). XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering (F). XE6 Food Technology (G). XE7 Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (H). XE8 Energy Science (I). XE9 Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (was the TF paper).
The brochure divides the syllabus of some papers into Core Topics and Special Topics. In AE, at least 90% of the questions in the related sections come from core topics. At most 10% come from special topics (GATE 2027 brochure, ). Check the syllabus note of your own paper for the same split. The brochure also says the syllabi for most papers are revised for GATE 2027.
Choose the GATE exam paper that fits your qualifying degree and your admission plan. GATE gives no personal advice on which paper to take. The official FAQ says candidates are expected to pick paper or papers suited to their degree discipline. You may pick another paper, but check the eligibility rules of the institutes you want (GATE 2027 FAQs, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs).
The GATE exam 2027 answer key will appear on the official website after the last exam day. IIT Madras has not announced the release date, the challenge dates or the challenge fee as of 1 October 2026. The brochure says these dates will be announced after the exam (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8, ).
The GATE exam 2027 answer key release date is not announced yet. The official dates page has no row for it (GATE 2027 important dates, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/important_dates). The table shows what the organising institutes published in earlier years.
| Year | Keys and responses released | Challenge window | Post-challenge key | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GATE 2026 | 22 February 2026 | 25 to 28 February 2026 | 18 March 2026 | 19 March 2026 |
| GATE 2024 | 19 February 2024 | From 22 February 2024 | 14 March 2024 | 16 March 2024 |
The GATE exam information for 2026 comes from the GATE 2026 notifications page (https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/notifications.html). The 2024 dates come from the GATE 2024 notifications page (https://gate2024.iisc.ac.in/notifications/). GATE 2025 accepted challenges from 27 February to 1 March 2025 (GATE 2025 important dates, https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/important-dates.html). These are past examples and not a promise for 2027.
You check your GATE exam responses in your GOAPS account, and you check the answer keys on the official website. The brochure lists the order: responses, answer keys, contests, evaluation, result and scorecard (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8, ).
For the GATE exam 2026, responses, the master question paper and its key went live together on 22 February 2026. Your response shows questions in the order you saw on screen. The key matches the master question paper only (GATE 2026 answer key instructions, ).
Some 2026 keys carried the entry "marks to all" for a question. Examples are Q58 in EE and Q19 in CE-1 (GATE 2027 Downloads page, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download).
The GATE exam 2027 Downloads page carries answer keys for 2021 to 2026 beside each question paper (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download). IIT Guwahati also keeps its 2026 papers and keys at https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/QPs-answer-keys.html. Each key gives GATE exam details such as question number, session, type, section, answer and marks.
You challenge the GATE exam answer key in GOAPS on dates that IIT Madras announces. You pay a fee. The brochure allows contests "during the specified dates" against a fee (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8, ).
IIT Madras has not published the fee per question for GATE exam 2027. The public GATE 2026 pages did not show the fee. In 2026, candidates with a provisional application could not contest a key (GATE 2026 notifications, https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/notifications.html).
The brochure does not say whether a revised GATE exam key follows the challenge window. Section 8 says only that evaluation will be finalised after the contests. In 2026, IIT Guwahati released the master question papers and keys again on 18 March 2026. That was one day before the result. IISc Bengaluru released final answer keys on 14 March 2024 (GATE 2024 notifications, https://gate2024.iisc.ac.in/notifications/).
You can estimate your GATE exam marks from the answer key, but you cannot estimate your GATE score. Marks follow the marking scheme. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks, and a wrong MCQ costs 1/3 or 2/3 mark. The GATE score needs the qualifying marks and the top candidates' mean, which come only with the result. A multi-session paper also needs normalisation first (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8.1, ).
GATE exam 2027 results are announced on 19 March 2027 in GOAPS, as per the official dates page. A scorecard is issued only to candidates who score at least the SC/ST/PwD qualifying marks of their paper. The GATE 2027 result page tracks the announcement.

IIT Guwahati released the GATE exam 2026 scorecard on 27 March 2026, eight days after the result. Free download ran from 27 March to 31 May 2026. The paid download cost Rs 500 per paper from 1 June to 31 December 2026 (GATE 2026 brochure, ). Provisional candidates could fix defects from 10 to 15 March 2026 (GATE 2026 notifications, https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/notifications.html). The Statistical and Performance Report came out on 24 September 2026. GATE exam information on the same steps for 2027 is not announced.
Only candidates who score at least the SC/ST/PwD qualifying marks of their paper get a GATE exam 2027 scorecard. The scorecard is valid for three years from the result date. After the free download period, each paper costs Rs 500 until 31 December 2027. From 1 January 2028, GATE issues no scorecards for GATE 2027. A candidate below the qualifying marks can download a performance report later. The source is brochure section 8.2 ().
Yes, GATE exam marks can be negative, and the GATE score can be negative even when the marks are positive. The official FAQ says the score comes from an equation that uses result parameters of the paper. This is the most common doubt about GATE exam scores, and it is not a portal error.
No, the GATE exam does not change data on an issued scorecard. The data is already shared with admitting institutes, COAP and PSUs. Take any discrepancy up with the institute, COAP or PSU. Application details are different. You can correct them only in the rectification window, 14 to 21 October 2026 (GATE 2027 important dates, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/important_dates).
The GATE exam gives separate scores and ranks only for GG and XH, based on your section choice. AR, GE and RA candidates get no separate score or rank for Part B1 or B2. The sources are the GATE 2027 FAQs (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs) and the brochure ().
GATE cutoff 2027 means the qualifying marks of each paper in the GATE entrance exam. IIT Madras sets them after the GATE exam from candidates' marks. The official sources give no publication date for the qualifying marks. The GATE 2027 cutoff page will carry them once IIT Madras publishes.
The General category qualifying mark equals the mean plus the standard deviation of marks of the candidates in that paper. It is never below 25 and never above 40. Other categories scale from the General figure (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8.1, ).
Qualifying marks = mean + standard deviation of candidates who appeared. The floor is 25 marks and the ceiling is 40.
In the GATE exam 2026, the General qualifying mark was 30 in CS and 25.2 in ME. The floor of 25 applied to AE, AG, BM, CH, CY and GE. The ceiling of 40 applied to AR, EY, MT and PE, and to the XH English and Sociology sections. The figures come from the GATE 2026 cut-off page (GATE 2026 qualifying cut-off marks, https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/cut-off.html).
| Paper (GATE 2026) | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
| CS | 30 | 27 | 20 |
| EC | 26.4 | 23.7 | 17.5 |
| DA | 26.4 | 23.7 | 17.5 |
| CE | 28.7 | 25.8 | 19.1 |
| EE | 27.7 | 24.9 | 18.4 |
| ME | 25.2 | 22.6 | 16.7 |
| AE, AG, BM, CH, CY, GE (floor) | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
| AR, EY, MT, PE (ceiling) | 40 | 36 | 26.6 |
GG and XH show separate marks by section on that page. The formula sets one qualifying mark for a whole paper, so GA has no separate minimum in it.
No, the GATE exam qualifying cutoff only decides who gets a scorecard. The common mistake about GATE exam cutoff is to read the qualifying mark as an admission mark. A scorecard needs at least the SC/ST/PwD qualifying marks. Each institute sets its own admission cutoff. A candidate above the qualifying marks may still fall short of a department's shortlist. PSUs shortlist under their own criteria, and each publishes its own recruitment notice. GATE says qualifying does not assure a PSU job.
The General qualifying marks in the GATE exam 2026 ranged from 25 to 40 across papers. The table lists more papers. The OBC-NCL and EWS figure is 9/10 of the General mark. The SC, ST and PwD figure is 2/3. The source is the GATE 2026 qualifying cut-off page (https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/cut-off.html).
| Paper (GATE 2026) | General qualifying marks |
|---|---|
| PH | 25.5 |
| BT | 25.8 |
| MN | 29.5 |
| ES | 30 |
| ST | 30.4 |
| TF | 31.5 |
| NM | 33.7 |
| MA | 34.7 |
| XE | 35.2 |
| PI | 36 |
| XL | 36.3 |
| IN | 39.8 |
IIT Madras has not published an expected GATE exam cutoff for 2027. The formula keeps the General qualifying mark between 25 and 40 in every paper. The GATE 2026 values are the latest official reference. They were 30 in CS, 28.7 in CE, 27.7 in EE, 26.4 in EC and 25.2 in ME. The mean and standard deviation of the 2027 candidates will set the final figure.
IITs published GATE score cutoffs from 600 to 900 for General CS and CSE seats in their latest notices. Each figure means something different, as the last column shows. Scores are out of 1000.
| Institute | Programme | General | OBC-NCL | SC / ST | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Bombay | CSE, TA category | 600 | 540 | 400 | Minimum GATE score to apply |
| IIT Delhi | CSE, M.Tech full-time | 780 (UR and EWS) | 702 | 530 | Shortlisting cutoff, semester 1 of 2026-27 |
| IIT Kharagpur | CS, JMP | 808 | 746 | 561 / 529 | GATE score cut-off as printed, 2026 |
| IIT Madras | CS1Y, HTTA | 900 | 796 | 625 / 589 | GATE cut-off score as printed, 2026 |
| IIT Guwahati | CSE | 650 | 585 | 433 | Cutoff followed for July 2025 admission |
The sources are:
The IIT Madras notice does not define its cut-off score. IIT Guwahati had not declared its 2026 cutoff on that page. IISc Bengaluru publishes its own cutoff report (https://www.iisc.ac.in/admissions/cut-off-report-and-gate-score-of-previous-years/).
GATE scores for NIT CSE seats in CCMT 2025 ran from 597 to 892 for Open category Group 1 candidates. CCMT 2026 has not posted its closing scores. The table shows the highest and lowest GATE score among candidates who got a seat in each round. Scores are out of 1000.
| Institute (CSE, CCMT 2025) | Round 1 highest / lowest | Round 3 highest / lowest |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 892 / 777 | 764 / 761 |
| NIT Warangal | 856 / 761 | 754 / 752 |

The source is the CCMT 2025 opening and closing report (https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/or-cr/).
No single GATE score is good for every institute, because each institute sets its own cutoff. For General CS seats, the IIT figures above run from 600 at IIT Bombay to 900 at IIT Madras. In CCMT 2025 Round 1, the last Open CSE seat went at 627 in NIT Durgapur. At NIT Tiruchirappalli it went at 777. Read the admission notice of each target institute for GATE exam information on its cutoff.
The brochure gives the GATE score formula below (GATE 2027 brochure, section 8.1, ).
GATE Score = Sq + (St - Sq) x (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq)
Multi-session papers convert raw marks to normalised marks first. This adjusts for differences in difficulty between sessions. CS and CE ran in two sessions in the GATE exam 2026, as per the GATE 2026 report.
There is no single counselling after the GATE entrance exam. Each admitting institute or employer runs its own selection after the result. The GATE 2027 counselling page explains COAP and CCMT in detail.
Admission after GATE exam 2027 follows the route of the institute you target. IITs and IISc take applications separately, NITs and some other institutes use CCMT, and PSUs recruit directly. The COAP and CCMT details below are from the 2026 cycle, and the 2027 portals are not live yet.
GATE exam for MTech admission works through the admitting institute, and the institute decides its own selection steps. Some admit directly on GATE performance. Others add a test, an interview or the academic record. For GATE exam information on one institute's selection steps, read that institute's admission notice. MoE guidelines set at least 70% weightage to GATE performance for admission with scholarship. The source is brochure section 5.3.1 ().

To get financial assistance, you must first secure admission at a centrally funded institute. The institute manages the scholarship, and it may limit the number of scholarships. Seat reservation follows the institute's norms and Government of India rules. The stipend figures come from the GATE 2027 opportunities page (GATE 2027 opportunities, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/opportunities). The 70% weightage and the scholarship rules come from brochure section 5.3.1.
Admission criteria for GATE exam for M.Tech seats differ by institute, so each department publishes its own rules. IIT Delhi selects M.Tech CSE candidates on the GATE score, with no test or interview (IIT Delhi M.Tech 2026, https://web.iitd.ac.in/~nbalaji/mtech/mtech2026.html). IIT Kanpur prepares its CSE M.Tech merit list only on GATE scores (IIT Kanpur CSE admissions, https://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/users/admissions/mtech/). IIT Roorkee uses normalised GATE marks and sets no minimum cutoff (IIT Roorkee M.Tech brochure 2026, ). IIT Bombay sets a minimum score to apply, and units may add a written test or interview.
Reservation in GATE exam for M.Tech admission follows the admitting institute's policy and Government of India rules. The GATE brochure gives no percentages (GATE 2027 brochure, section 5.3.1, ). The central norms are SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10% and 5% PwD inside each category. The source is the IIT Bombay UCEED 2026 brochure, section 6 (). That brochure is for a UG exam, so M.Tech seat tables can differ. A 30-seat IIT Guwahati programme in 2026-27 has 12 open, 3 EWS, 5 SC, 2 ST and 8 OBC-NCL seats. The matrix also reserves 5% of seats for PwD candidates ().
PSUs publish their own notices, and some accept only the current cycle's GATE score. POWERGRID's 2026 notice said GATE 2025 or earlier scores were not valid. Its final weightage was GATE marks 85%, group discussion 3% and personal interview 12%. The interview needed at least 40% for Unreserved and EWS candidates. Other categories needed 30%. The source is the POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2026 advertisement ().
NTPC says it hires engineering executive trainees through GATE. Aptitude and behavioural tests, group discussion and interview follow (NTPC recruitment system, https://ntpc.co.in/recruitment-system-ntpc). Coal India's 2026 Management Trainee (Mining) notice used GATE 2025 marks for 276 vacancies. It named no group discussion or interview (Coal India Advt 01/2026, https://www.coalindia.in/career-cil/jobs-coal-india/recruitment-management-trainees-basis-gate-2025-score/).
POWERGRID, GAIL, NTPC and Coal India have listed GATE exam 2027 recruitment notices as of 1 October 2026. POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee advertisement CC/03/2026, dated 24 September 2026, lists electrical, civil, computer science and electronics posts. It accepts only GATE 2027 marks and will announce vacancies in March or April 2027 ().
GAIL's first advertisement, dated 1 September 2026, lists chemical, instrumentation, electrical and mechanical posts. It accepts GATE 2027 marks only, with applications from 17 February to 18 March 2027 (). NTPC lists Advt No. 11/26 for GATE 2027 on its jobs page (https://ntpc.co.in/jobs-ntpc). Coal India lists a page titled Recruitment of Management Trainee based on GATE-2027 Score (https://www.coalindia.in/career-cil/jobs-coal-india/recruitment-of-management-trainee-based-on-gate-2027-score/). ONGC's last GATE-based notice on its page is Advt 1/2024, which used GATE 2023 scores ().
POWERGRID shortlisted Electrical candidates in its GATE 2025 cycle at 51 normalised marks out of 100 for UR. Civil needed 71.07 for UR. These are shortlisting cutoffs for calling candidates to group discussion and interview, and they are not final selection cutoffs.
| POWERGRID GATE 2025 shortlisting cutoff | UR | OBC-NCL | SC | ST | EWS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical (EE) | 51 | 45.67 | 37.67 | 35.33 | 43.67 |
| Civil (CE) | 71.07 | 68.24 | 58 | 54.93 | 67.22 |
The figures come from POWERGRID Notice-5 for EE () and Notice-7 for CE (). The CS UR cutoff was 80.26 and the EC UR cutoff was 62.33. These rest on 2 and 6 vacancies, so they are not typical. The sources are Notice-3 for CS () and Notice-4 for EC ().
The GATE entrance exam opens M.Tech seats, direct PhD research seats, PSU jobs and some government fellowships. No, qualifying in the GATE entrance exam does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. The GATE disclaimer says admission depends on each institute's eligibility and selection criteria. IIT Madras takes no responsibility for admission, scholarship or recruitment outcomes.
IITs, IISc and NITs are the main institutes that admit M.Tech students through the GATE entrance exam. NIRF 2025 ranks IIT Madras first among engineering institutes, with a score of 88.72 (NIRF India Rankings 2025, Engineering, https://www.nirfindia.org/Rankings/2025/EngineeringRanking.html). NIRF 2026 is not released as of 1 October 2026.
The top colleges for GATE exam for M.Tech admission are the IITs, IISc and NITs. The table gives the GATE exam details that matter for admission: NIRF 2025 Engineering rank, score and admission route. IISc Bengaluru is not in the NIRF Engineering list, but it is a COAP participant.

The ranks come from the NIRF 2025 page above. The COAP list comes from the COAP 2026 website (https://coap2026.iitr.ac.in/coap2026/). CCMT covers NITs, IIEST Shibpur and some IIITs (CCMT, https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/). The other institutes in the NIRF top 20 set their own admission routes. Read each admission notice for details about GATE exam acceptance.
Some other colleges and universities also use a GATE exam score for postgraduate admission without MoE assistance. Each sets its own rules and dates (GATE 2027 opportunities page, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/opportunities). Read the admission notice of each college before you apply. Several public sector undertakings also use the score for recruitment.
CCMT 2025 allotted NIT seats in M.Tech courses such as CSE, VLSI design and power systems. Other courses were structural engineering, machine design and communication systems. Each course asks for a GATE paper that matches it. IIT Kharagpur lists the eligible GATE papers for each programme in its 2026 eligibility document (). CCMT 2026 has not published its seat matrix (https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/).
COAP 2026 had 24 participating institutes, and IIT Roorkee coordinated it. The participants were:
No PSU took part in the 2026 cycle. The source is the COAP 2026 website (https://coap2026.iitr.ac.in/coap2026/).
Nine NITs rank in the NIRF 2025 Engineering top 50. The first four are NIT Tiruchirappalli (9), NIT Rourkela (13), NIT Karnataka Surathkal (17) and NIT Calicut (21). The next five are NIT Warangal (28), MNIT Jaipur (42), VNIT Nagpur (44), NIT Durgapur (49) and NIT Silchar (50). The source is the NIRF 2025 Engineering page (https://www.nirfindia.org/Rankings/2025/EngineeringRanking.html).
CCMT 2026 has not published an institute count or a seat matrix on its website (https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/). The CCMT 2025 closing-score report lists 78 institutes with data. That count is derived from the report and is not an official total (https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/or-cr/).
No official total exists for M.Tech seats open through the GATE exam. The GATE, COAP and CCMT brochures give none. Each institute publishes its own seat table. IIT Kharagpur lists seats programme by programme, for example 76 in Computer Science for 2026 (). IIT Madras publishes its own table at .
IIT Madras charged an institute fee of Rs 66,402 for General, EWS and OBC-NCL M.Tech candidates in the 2026 round. SC, ST and PwD candidates paid Rs 41,402. Half-time teaching assistance was Rs 12,400 per month for up to 22 months (IIT Madras M.Tech admissions, https://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in/). The GATE 2027 opportunities page gives the same Rs 12,400 figure for M.Tech assistance (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/opportunities).
The GATE exam 2027 Downloads page carries previous year question papers from 2007 to 2026 (GATE 2027 Downloads, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download). The GATE 2027 question paper page explains how to use them.
Download them from the Downloads page of the GATE exam 2027 website. The page lists individual papers and answer keys for 2021 to 2026 and a bulk download for 2007 to 2026. The 2026 list has 38 question-paper files for 30 test papers. CE, CS, GG and XH are split into parts. It includes Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF). The Downloads page is at https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download.
The GATE exam 2027 Downloads page lists 38 question-paper files and 38 answer-key files each for 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2023 list has 31 files of each type, and the 2022 list has 29. The counts are from the GATE 2027 Downloads page (https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download). The 2026 papers follow the pattern https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/static/doc/download/2026/QPs/ followed by the paper code. Papers from 2007 to 2020 sit only in the bulk download.
Use previous papers of the GATE entrance exam after you finish a syllabus topic. Then solve a full paper in exam-like conditions. GATE does not provide preparation guidance or coaching. The official FAQ tells aspirants to refer to previous papers and the official syllabus (GATE 2027 FAQs, https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in/faqs). A timed paper shows where speed and accuracy fall short.
Two 2027 changes affect past papers. RA is new, so no earlier RA paper exists. TF papers up to 2026 are the closest practice for XE9, because TF is now that section.
GATE exam previous year analysis shows rising registrations and a qualifying share that stays near 19%. Registered candidates rose from 6,70,256 in GATE 2023 to 10,11,719 in GATE 2026. That is a rise of about 51%, derived from the official reports.

Preparation for the GATE entrance exam works best around the official syllabus of your paper and the exam rules. GATE gives no guidance about GATE exam preparation, so the syllabus and past papers are your official guides.
Start GATE exam 2027 preparation by downloading the revised syllabus of your paper and listing every topic. Note the GATE exam details of your paper first: its marks split, sections and question types. Then work through these steps.
A paper has 65 questions in 180 minutes. That is about 2.8 minutes per question on average.
Negative marking in GATE exam applies only to MCQs, so MSQ and NAT questions cost nothing when wrong. A blind guess on a four-option MCQ has zero expected marks. The chance of 1 in 4 to gain 1 mark equals the 3 in 4 chance to lose 1/3 mark. The same holds for 2-mark MCQs.
MSQ and NAT give no partial marks. For MSQ, you must pick every correct option and no wrong one.
The GATE exam gives no official target for the number of attempts. Negative marking applies only to MCQs, so a wrong MSQ or NAT answer costs nothing. Attempt every MSQ and NAT question where you can reason to an answer. A blind MCQ guess has zero expected marks. Coaching institutes reported good attempts of 50 to 55 in CS 2025 and 50 to 60 in EC 2026. These are coaching views and not official figures. The sources are PW analyses (reported, https://www.pw.live/gate/exams/gate-cs-exam-analysis-2025 and https://www.pw.live/gate/exams/gate-ece-exam-analysis-2026).
Official GATE material is the syllabus and past papers, not a book list. Use the textbooks of your own degree course for the topics in the syllabus. Match each textbook chapter to a syllabus topic and drop chapters that the syllabus does not list.
IIT Madras has not published the GATE exam 2027 mock test link as of 1 October 2026. The brochure says mock links and the virtual calculator will be on the official website (brochure section 7, ). Use the mock to learn the on-screen interface, the section-choice steps and the NAT keypad before GATE exam day.
For the GATE exam 2026, the mock links went live on 12 November 2025 (GATE 2026 notifications, https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/notifications.html). The mock page had 38 links, one for each paper and each split paper (https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/mock-test-links.html). IIT Guwahati said mock answers are not evaluated and no score card is generated. It also said the question mix may differ from the real exam. GATE 2025 mock links went live on 26 October 2024 (https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/notifications.html). GATE 2024 mock links went live on 26 November 2023 (https://gate2024.iisc.ac.in/notifications/).
